PLAYING HOOKY
3
In our "blue-making" (Blaumachen) workshops, you will dye with natural indigo, one of the oldest dyes in the world. The patterns are created using Shibori, a Japanese resist technique. You fold, tie, or clamp the fabric before it goes into the dye bath. Wherever it is pressed tightly together, the dye cannot reach, and that is how the pattern is revealed later.
Indigo behaves differently than any other dye. In the vat, it is dissolved and shimmers with a yellowish-green hue. When you pull the fabric out, the dye reacts with the oxygen in the air, and within a few minutes, green turns into blue. With each subsequent immersion, the shade becomes darker, from a light sky blue to a deep navy.
The German expression "blau machen" (to play hooky/take a day off) is often attributed to dyers of past centuries, who would leave their fabrics to air after dyeing and take a break themselves during this time.
